Q: "What is the minimum amount of auto insurance I need in Massachusetts?"
Massachusetts state law requires Bodily Injury Liability limits of $20,000 minimum per injured person, and up to a total of $40,000 per accident, and Property Damage Liability coverage with a minimum of $5,000 in coverage. In addition to this coverage, Massachusetts, a No Fault State, also requires drivers to carry Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist (UM) Bodily Injury Liability coverage of $20,000/$40,000 and Personal Injury Protection (PIP) in the amount of a $5,000 limit.
NOTE: As of April, 1st 2008 Massachusetts will have switched over to a new auto insurance system called "Managed Competition". This new insurance system will give consumers more choices for auto insurance companies in the state as new insurance agencies sign on to underwrite in Massachusetts.
Massachusetts Coverage: 20/40/5
Bodily Injury Liability: $20,000/$40,000 Limit
Property Damage Liability: $5,000 Limit
Uninsured/Underinsured: $20,000/$40,000
Uninsured Motorist Property Damage: $5,000
Although 20/40/5 is the minimum requirement for auto insurance in Massachusetts, that may not be enough coverage to properly take care of damge, injury, or valuable assets. Finding the right amount of coverage is necessary to insure that you, your family and your assets will be covered in the case of damages from an automobile accident.
